Opiate Addition Has Hit Record High Numbers

Opiate addition has hit record high numbers. In the Midwest of America, it has become a never-ending cycle of drug use by residents. Family and friends of these drug addicts have been affected greatly. This has become a legitimate problem starting in 2005. The reason for that is because there was over a 300% increase in consumption, production, and distributing. Once that hit, Americans in all parts of the country were caught with abusing prescription pills becoming addicted to them. These pills are mainly opiates.

It was only the beginning of the problem since people were realizing there is a cheaper way to get the same effect as prescription medication such as opiates. The name of this drug is called heroin and not only is it cheaper but it is easier to get access to it. The outcome of this has turned into people being addicted to two types of drugs. The hardest hit part of the United States is the Midwest. Before 2005, the country has never seen an escalation of this kind before. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) started calling it an epidemic in 2009. It is the first time in American history that a drug problem has had the status of an epidemic.

The worst hit locations are mainly in the state of Illinois. Not all the cities we will mention in this article are all hit the same. Some of them are worse off than others since some have had the problem be called an emergency. Champaign Illinois is the tenth most populated city in the state. According to a recent study, 20% of the total population over 12 years of age has abused a kind of opiate at least once in their life. It is usually the mid-sized cities that are around large urban areas that get hit the hardest. In the last few years, the amount of people abusing drugs has increased compared to ten years ago.

Rockford Illinois is one of the worst hit cities in the United States with the kind of drug epidemic, the actual worse city being Chicago. Rockford even has a reputation for being the biggest trafficking and pill popping destination. Even if the city is considered to be upper middle class, it is known to have an increase of heroin use in the nation. Women and those who have good incomes as well as private insurance also partake in heroin abuse in the area.
